Hawaii Race weekend!

On May 14-15th, Maui, HI hosted the Olukai Ho' Olaule'a Maliko downwind run.

On Saturday the 14th Talia completed the 8 mile paddle, 300 yard beach run in 59.24, coming in as the 2nd place Overall woman to the beach and the 19th paddler out 210 paddlers, men and women.

" I was super excited to be apart of the Olukai event, it's so much fun. The family atmosphere and the gathering of so many talented paddlers in my own back yard makes this event so special." says Talia

Talia stayed most of the day to receive her award and enjoy the festivities and live music by local artist Paula Fuga. Then she packed up and took an evening flight over to Oahu for the Gerry Lopez Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle.

On Sunday the 15th she competed in the 10 mile Hawaii Kai downwind run, where she came in 9th Overall and 2nd place in her age division.

"This one was a grinder! The start was flat, then we started catching some bumps and at Black Point it felt like my E- Brake was on. I was just excited to make it in the top ten."

Talia rounds out her last week as a High School student with a great competition weekend. She officially graduates tomorrow. 2nd place Overall at the Olukai Ho' Olaule'a

* Organize a pick up/drop off system with a buddy for the Ho'okipa to Kanaha downwinder. It is best to drop off a car at Kanaha in the morning and put boards into another car to take up to Ho'okipa. You will then have transportation back.
*It is a free event, but with $20 donation you will get a deluxe event goodie bag with event shirt and other surprises! These donations are greatly appreciated and will help future events happen.
*Remember this is not a race. We are there to be helpful to each other and encourage one another to complete the downwind in a fun and community building way.

The Butterfly Effect brings women together for noncompetitive ocean sport gatherings in coastal cities all over the world. The aim is to instill self-confidence and a love for the ocean in women of all skill levels by providing one-day downwind events, ocean sport holiday trips, and/or ocean sport clinic trips. The Butterfly Effect also aims to work with the local community by providing requested necessities, volunteer work and other community services. The overall dream for The Butterfly Effect is to continue to develop awareness and nurture relationships with the ocean which provides us water enthusiasts with the ultimate playground. This will help towards ensuring intergenerational sustainability of our pristine environment for our future “keiki” to enjoy and be blessed with what we have."

Maui to Molokai Solo 4/23/11

On Saturday I paddled from Maui to Molokai in the MCKC M2M Race, finishing the only solo SUP woman to compete. I paddled with out an escort boat, but the one woman's relay team were awesome and gave me a Coke when I started crashing... I felt like million bucks after that. They will probably never give me a Coke again haha. It was such an awesome experience being out there in the middle of the Pailolo channel on Easter weekend, I had a lot of time to think about what Jesus did for us.

Tsunami Weekend 3/11/11

On Thursday evening after windsurfing I got the news that a 9.1 earthquake had happen right off the coast of Japan which triggered a huge tsunami, along with the earthquake destroyed everything 4 miles inland. Craziness oh yah and a tsunami was heading straight towards Hawaii and later finding out that the west coast of the states would be hit also. We were very lucky because It could have been a lot worst here in the islands but we defiantly got hit, but nobody got hurt. A couple days later I was back in the water and took my sister and our friend on a down wind paddle.

Keep Japan and the people in your prayers and any damage in hawaii or the west coast.

Another Weekend on Maui ♥

This pasted weekend was so perfect the weather the waves and the beach! I loved it. After a day of surfing me and my family went on a beach walk which was so beautiful! I have been trying to really take in all that is so amazing about Maui which is pretty much all of it. When I do things that a tourist would do I feel like I start to appreciate it more haha. Its like being on Vacation 24/7 except I have work do school and everything else, but when I stop myself and look around at God's miraculous creation it hits me.

Today My Sister Tehani our friend Jenny and myself went for a afternoon Stand-up Surf it was Jenny's second time in waves and she did so well, I think she is pretty hooked on SUP I tried to get some photos but the housing for the camera started fogging up. :(

Down Winder

Today I got to take my friend Jenny on her first down winder and we almost ran into two turtles mating!!! I had the most awesome day on the ocean I surfed for three hours this morning in Waiehu which was so much fun!! There was no clouds in the sky the ocean was crystal clear and the waves were small and super super fun It was an amazing Saturday.

I was really Lucky to be able to go to Namotu Fiji last week for SUP surfing which was the most amazing week this is the perfect dream island!! The best food! amazing surf and awesome people and nice diving and amazing SHELLS!! I was recently picked up by Roxy my favorite surf brand growing up! So I have been really enjoying the bikinis and clothes. they are the best! Also Maui Jims are the nicest sunglasses out there and make everything come alive and really protect those eyes from getting a pterygium which I already had before I started wearing them. haha If you ever have a chance to go here take it!! ♥

Pashey Designz

At the age of 12, Talia Gangini took her hobby of jewelry making to the next level by creating Pashey Designz. Her hand crafted jewelry that has been sold at some of Maui’s finest boutiques for the past four years. Pashey Designz are well known for their combination of delicate sea shells and hammered gold/silver. Now at 16, Talia's jewelry has been feautred on the cover of Sports Illustrated 2009 swimsuit issue. She is youngest designer to ever be featured in the magazine. Mgbikini.com

Talia Gangini was born and raised in the Hawaiian Islands. She soaked up all that is beautiful about Hawaii: surf, arts and long walks on the beach hunting Puka shells. Life in Maui has groomed her athletic fire and capabilities. When her dad tookher out on a surfboard for the first time at 15 months, it must have triggered something deep inside of her. In 2007, Talia became the youngest women to ever paddle the 32 mile Molokai to Oahu paddle board race on a team. This year she is planning to do it Solo. She is also planning to compete in the OC-1 Race covering the same distance. Her long term goal is to carry on the Polynesian tradition of paddling and becoming the best water women to beat.

Valley Isle

Okay this is something that I praise God for.. Out of all the places on this earth, God chose to place me here on Maui, I fall in love with it more and more everyday. I am so so very thankful that I was able to grow up here on this amazing Island. He could have placed me in a middle of a war somewhere or there is so many different places in the world where its all about fear and gnarly things go on. I get to live on Maui then I worry and complain about the stupidest things.

If this one island is amazingly beautiful then I can't wait to see the rest of this world!

Spontaneous Surfing mission

Yesterday was a good day! There was a small south/west swell that hit maui this week, so yesterday Tehani (my sis) and our friend Alex and my self journeyed over to the other side and I guess everyone one was working or tried from surfing all week because we got to surf pools which is right off Front St. in Lahaina. It was the three of us plus One other guy it was awesome! and its the second time that this has happened to me. The waves weren't the best, but on any given day I would choose a un-crowed wave with all my friends that is the best surf session!

Then as we were driving back right before sunset we stopped on the side of the road on the pali and SUP this small fun glassy perfect little wave and again just the three of us! I love days like that, it is so much better when things aren't all planned out everything is a lot more exciting. When we make plans they never work out to the exact way we wanted them to. So why worry, just trust that God has an awesome plan for the day! SO heres a little clip from my sup sess haha

So the past couple days I have been focused on getting ready for the philippines mission trip, coming up here in about less then 2 weeks how exciting!! I have been also making some jewelry and trying to think of some new designs. for the Christmas jewelry/craft fair, that goes on every year in Wailea at a friends home. By the time I get back from my trip I will have less then a month to make stuff and have a good inventory. I have been so busy with school, and everything else that I enjoy doing. I think it won't really slow down until after christmas.. You know what, scratch that I never really slow down!

So this Summer was different instead of paddling and training for the molokai to oahu and all the races in between. I decided that I would take a break and try some new things. I feel like thats what I am all about lately, change and discovering new things. So it was a lot of fun I basically SUP surfed and did a couple races here and there which was really fun for me I still went on down wind paddles, I was just having a lot of fun. I went to California in July for a SUP surf contest which was a first time thing. At this event there were races I ended up doing three different races it was so much fun all the races were sprints through the surf which I am not use to I was having such a good time meeting new people and doing new things. It was also a business trip. One of the things I was worried about going there was that it was so expensive for me to get there my ticket was like $600- round trip. The second day I was there God said hello to me!! hah I sold way more then 600 dollars worth of jewelry!! it was awesome How He provides like that. So Once I got back from Cali my friend started teaching me how to wind kook (windsurf), the day I got back and ever since then I have been moving 100 mph with everything its been awesome!!! My sister Tehani and myself even took a Kite surfing lesson, and today our friend is taking us so we can learn even more!! it is all so excited how God is showing me all these amazing things. Being a Christian is really fun because every day you have something to live for and if you let your eyes be open to Gods glory it makes life that much more crazy! God is so so good to me :)

Maui is the best Island if you love doing more then one water sport!

You can wake up and start your day at 5:30 and eat of course, then catch the waves before the wind picks up. Once the wind is up you have so much option of things to do. You can either take a Stand-up board , lay down paddle board other known as the misery stick but it is actually really fun when its windy because you feel like you are apart of the ocean or flying on it, or you can take a Oc-1 canoe and go down wind with any of these vessels. Then after that you can either Wind Kook or Kite surf. Then once the evening comes around and if there is still surf you can take your SUP hah, and Stand-up surf! Or you can take all those sports and do them in a week! depending on what the weather is like. Just go for it!

If you are more of a Land person, you can go horse back riding or bike riding in the Pineapple fields, Hiking, cliff jumping or hang out and enjoy what God created us to live on. If this place is so amazing, then I really can't image what heaven will be like.

"This small Siargao island is known as the Philippine surfing capital. Dancing with a gigantic wave is the main magnetism in this island. If you are ready to get wet, then this island promise you to get wild over water. Some people say that it takes you long to be in this appreciated island, yet its worth for an adventure lover just like you. You can reach this island for almost seven hours to be exact from the time you left the capital city of the Manila Philippines.

I really think that God is going to show me a lot on this island, I feel like I have been so secluded I really have the urge to get out and experience the world and just something totally different from North America! I have been to Australia.. But other then that I have just been to places in North America. which is still awesome but I know that God created so much more I want to see it all because then It will just make me understand his word so much more.

Under Da Sea

Its amazing how big our Planet is, but really Planet Earth should be called Planet Ocean Because there is so much more Water then Land. The majority of people never even get to enjoy the Beauty of this under Water World. I feel so Blessed to be able to be surrounded by ocean. Everywhere I turn I see the Sea. Every time I am in the Ocean I feel at peace and its a place where I can totally be my self. Most of the time I am floating on top of the water wondering what lays beneath me. Most of the time I probably wouldn't want to know though. Researchers have found so many different fish and sea life that we would never see with our own eyes. The cool thing is that there are some many different kinds of ocean . You can tell when the Ocean is really alive because if you look at the coral you can see all the beautiful colors and everything just has so much life. It is such an awesome thing to be live around and play in everyday!

Giving Back

I am been enjoying the Art of Jewelry making for the past 6 years, I have been able to make a good amount of money doing it. I have been able to pay my Gas, cell phone and all those other things you have to pay for when growing up. I have been able to get up and go to a different Island for the weekend for a Race or just to relax. So last Spring I was Asking God How I could make jewelry for a good cause or to glorify Him. Then literality two weeks later I am told about Hope for the Island. http://www.hopefortheisland.org/Hopes_Website/Home.html And How they have a really great art program going on down there and they needed someone to teach Jewelry classes. They also have a full on surfing mission, I was like hey God! He totally answered my prayers but in the process he gave me a patience's test because I was sure when I was going to get to go. I was very eager to go on a mission trip because I have never been. So This October I am planning to venture down to Hope for the Islands in the Philippines. I will be down there for a couple weeks with a small group of people from Hope Chapel, teaching the young woman the art of jewelry making. I am really excited because I will be able to teach these people a trade to have a source of income so they can care for themselves rather than being dependent on others. I want to" teach them how to fish not just give them a fish." I will also be involved in the surfing ministry giving them an opprotunity to learn to surf and Stand Up paddle. I will be leaving some of my equipment down there so they can practice while I am gone. 1 Chronicles 16:8 " Give thanks to the Lord call on His name make known among the nations what he has done." I will be leaving Sep 29 and returning Oct 16 People don't really know about stand up paddling where I am going, so I am excited to introduce it to them. I hope they enjoy it just as much I as do! For the Jewelry making I will be teaching them how to use there own shells right off of their beaches so they can use there own resources!

3 Hawaiian Channels

Last Weekend was super random but awesome at the same time. It started with deciding to go to Hana super last minute and it ended up being the perfect Hana day! The weather was beautiful and it was such a peaceful day with hardly anyone around. Then by 6:30 pm I get a call from a friend asking if I want to paddle from Maui to Molokai then Molokai to Oahu Saturday and Sunday in a Six man Canoe! It sounded like an awesome opportunity to paddle with the Best Women's Six Man team in the World. So I thought it through for like a second and couldn't resist the adventure. Only thing was that I was all the way out in Hana which is about 2 hours away from my house if you follow the speed limit which is 15 mph!! And I hadn't paddled since May, that was 4 months ago, oh yah and I had never been in a 6 man canoe the the open ocean. So I got in my car and asked God to get me home safe and fast! It was amazing there were no cars on the road and it took an hour to get back, that is such a God thing. So the next morning was an early one, we got up at 5:30 ate breakfast then headed over to the opposite side of the island. There was also a Mens Crew 12 of them and 12 women two boats. So each person was in the water for 30 minutes and resting for 30 minutes on the Escort boat. As I watched the first team of 6 women paddle away to start this exciting voyage I new we had something to look forward to. Any Time when entering the Pailolo Channel, which separates the islands of Molokai and Maui, is always exciting. You take a side course for a couple miles to get to the surf or other known as wind swells which are a life savers in any long distant paddle. Once you reach this straight down wind line, well basically no words and explain the thrill of riding these never ending ocean sleigh rides. As you drop in to a bump you are leading as far back as far as possible to keep to nose of the canoe out of the ocean. Then you reach Kaunakakai and then you enter the The Kalohi Channel is the stretch of water separating Lana'i and Molokai. Usually the wind settles down and becomes more of a flat water race. This was not the case on this day we surfed all the way to Hale'o'Lono, where we camped and regrouped. Then on Sunday it was time to finish the Voyage into the Kaiwi Channel with was another 40 miles. In those two days I was so blessed because I got to do something that not very many people get to do in there life time. Its just such an eye opener being out there in the middle of the Ocean. Every time it just makes me see how Big God is and how we are just little specks rolling through the ocean. God is the biggest artist of all, He designed such a beautiful place for us to live and praise Him, yet we forget or run away from His beauty every day. The truth is right in front of our eyes but we just keep them shut because we want to do everything ourselves and have to much pride.

Battle of the Paddle 09

The Battle of the Paddle in Dana Point California was a crazy event and so much fun! The start was crazy we started on the beach then once the race started people were falling and bumping into each other, there was also broken boards, paddles and people all over the place. I have never done anything like this before it, right when the race started it seemed like the waves got bigger. It was a 5 miles and in between each lap we had to run.. I can't wait for next year!! :)
